AI WARNINGS IN SCI-FI MOVIES
Anyone remember Battle Star Galactica?
Seems no one brings it up when discussing AI.
In my humble opinion, it is the most powerful warning about
Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robotics to be presented on TV.
It had 2 runs, once in the 1960s and a gritter reboot in the 1990s.
The civilization depicted in the show is socially similar to ours,
but with space ships capable of faster than light (FTL) travel around the galaxy.
They mistreated the robots, which were very intelligent and self aware.
One day, all the robots just disappeared. Decades later, they came back with a vengeance.
They used the element of surprise to nuke their former masters.
Billions died, but a few got away on the Galactica and some other ships.
They spent years running from pursuing robot ships with the occasional battle.
The robot's goal was to exterminate all humans.
There are many other Sci-Fi movies and TV shows dealing with this subject.
Star Trek TNG has Mr. Data and his evil brother Lor.
They were created by Dr. Sung.
Lor took up with the Borg and convinced Data to join him.
Not a pretty scene.
The TV series Person of Interest didn't have intelligent robots, but did have 2
Supercomputers (The Machine and Samaritan) that were at war with each other.
These computers were both sentient. Finche's machine's program gathered info from cameras,
the internet, news and other sources to attempt to predict and prevent crimes.
Former CIA agent Reese did the Machine's interventions.
Samaritan even recruited humans to do it's dirty work out in the real world.
In the end, Samaritan's human employees kill Reese.
This was 2011, well before the AI as we know it today.
Go look it up on IMDB, it's a really great TV Series. I've watched it all the way through.
Back then, we had "expert systems" that were narrowly focused in certain fields.
These were large programs that you purchased and installed on your computer,
no data centers needed.
